The Great Machine

The cosmic engine behind everything. An endless network of Gears of Destiny, it links every action and consequence in an invisible chain of cause and effect. It’s the hidden system that keeps reality turning—deciding how the world moves, looks, and feels.

Destiny

The physical state of the world shaped by the movements of the Great Machine’s gears. Every choice and ripple of karma rewrites it in real time. So destiny isn’t fate, it’s the ever-changing nature of reality.

Torus

A golden ring that channels and stores karma, acting as the core battery for karmastry. Escape Artists use them to shape reality, but the same design powers modern karma-tech across the world—from handheld gear to entire cities.

Payback Undertow

The invisible current that cleans up after karmastry. It slowly erases anything the universe deems unnatural—karmastry constructs vanish, effects fades, and reality resets itself like a tide pulling everything back into balance.

Payback Phantoms

The Great Machine doesn’t just reset reality when you push too hard—it sends enforcers. Payback phantoms range from minor nuisances to full-blown karmic nightmares that will sabotage, chase, and attack you. The stronger the karmastry use, the more dangerous the response.

Flux Destinies

Pocket worlds built by Escape Artists with karmastry that exist outside the Great Machine’s control. Inside them, karma flows freely and payback doesn’t strike… but they need constant positive karma to stay alive or they risk collapse.

Karma-Tech

Technology powered by karma instead of electricity. Toruses large and small built into devices pull energy straight from the environment, making everything from household appliances to weapons systems run on the same force that moves the universe itself.

Escape Artists

Escape Artists are skilled practitioners of karmastry, making them celebrities in a world where pushing the limits of what's possible is a spectator sport. Named for their skill in evading payback, Escape Artists live on the edge of magic and consequence.

Originally built for military use, they are now a core part of everyday life in most countries, handling everything from public service and medical assistance to industrial work.
